The Soulful Cafe currently has an opening for a part-time Cashier. The cafe is a fun and dynamic environment where you come in contact with a vastly diverse group of people. We provide delicious, healthy and economical food for congregants. Reporting to Director of Retail, the Cashier will work closely with the Kitchen Coordinator and Ministry of Service team to ensure the Sunday operations of the cafe run smoothly. The position requires safe and healthy food handling acumen, accurate cash handling, as well as warmly greeting and assisting guests with food sales and other inquiries. This position requires a familiarity with the church as well as Science of Mind Principles. Personnel will regularly act as an ambassador of the church to the public.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working independently, and with colleagues, as it relates to the overall day-to- day activities related to the operation of the cafe, equipment set up and breakdown, accurate cash handling and reporting, proper and timely opening/closing procedures.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, ring sales accurately and support customers with a range of questions and needs.
  • Ability to remain cheerful under very busy circumstances.
  • Responsible for re-stocking operational supplies in a timely fashion.
  • Support Ministry of Service volunteers with a focus on training and motivation.
  • Assist in food assembly, service and storage.
  • Assist with cleaning kitchen surfaces and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the above essential functions satisfactorily and possess a high level of interpersonal skills associated with an extraordinary customer service commitment. In addition, this position requires someone who is a team player with the ability to cultivate a team spirit and communicate effectively and appropriately when challenges arise.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required of this position:

  • Prefer at least 1 year cash handling experience.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, reach, climb ladders for a minimum 8 hour shift.
  • Strong problem solving ability and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage currency and to ensure that levels are adequate.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately to process customer payments and keep the line moving efficiently.
  • Ability to work well with others, be positive and maintain an uplifting attitude at all times.
  • Ability to be flexible with a sense of urgency to shift priorities to meet requirements of the church.
  • Proficient with cash register, computers and point-of- sale software.
  • Work schedule of 3-4 Sunday’s per month required.

Physical Demands

Lifting and or moving of 20 pounds routinely are required, as well as good dexterity and mobility. Walking, sitting, stooping, bending and use of a ladder are required functions on a daily basis. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Education and Experience

This position requires cashiering experience, strong organizational ability, adequate computer skill, familiarity with food health and safety. Overall knowledge of payment processing equipment and record keeping.
