Things That Join the Sea and the Sky: Field Notes on Living
Mark Nepo shares honest reflections drawn from his lifelong journals over the last fifteen years.
These pages are field notes on living – a travelogue of conversations with the Universe – a mix of inner reflections, questions and stories that teach us how to live.
They contain moments of sinking and being lifted; intimate accounts of being thrust into feeling and depth; stretching and wondering about life in this ongoing push pull with a universe that holds us, then tosses us about, only to hold us again.
- classic challenges like “Stopping the Noise,” “Unraveling Our Fear,” “The Gift of Deepening,” and “The Practice of Relationship.”
- the nature and gift of journaling and journaling guidelines.
Mark weaves in poems from his book of poetry, The Way Under the Way, gathered from 217 poems shaped over the past twenty years.
This talk is based on his new book, Things That Join the Sea and the Sky.

Finding Inner Courage
An experiential workshop of being in relationship with deep and life-giving material. No experience is required, just a beginner’s mind and heart.
Courage means to stand by one’s core. Encourage means to impart strength and confidence, to inspire and hearten.
The courage that’s admired, where ordinary people summon unexpected strength to run into burning buildings or to stand up to tyrants, grows from another type of courage: inner courage – the ground of quiet braveries where visible braveries sprout.
How do we find our way to our core, to stand by our core and sustain the practice of living from courage? How do we encourage ourselves, each other and the world? What does it mean to live a life of encouragement?
These questions frame the journey of this workshop. This is an education we don’t receive in school, but life keeps shouting at us.
Using ancient and contemporary stories, poetry, journaling and dialogue, delve into:
- the courage to listen to your own life.
- the gift of vulnerability and the willingness to explore your own voice.
- the commitment to respect your and others’ journeys.
- the life skill of working with what you’re given.
This workshop is based on Marks’ book, Finding Inner Courage.
9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Oct. 14, Vogt Auditorium
